This would give employees the right to use sick leave for themselves or for family members. Unlike some other sick leave laws, it requires employers who require verification of illness to pay for the doctor's note.
The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii is fighting the proposed law for the same reason business groups have opposed sick leave in other cities and states: cost. For many businesses that are on the brink of survival, businesses worry that this added expense will force their businesses to close.
