When I have commitments that need to get done, it helps to know I’ve got someone who can look after my kids. This is not as easy as it sounds.
I’ve called many daycares and preschools over the years. Daycares usually won’t take a child on a part-time basis, especially not on an unpredictable schedule. Preschool classes usually meet at a specific time only. It can be hard to find babysitters during the day because teenagers are at school and other at-home parents are busy with their own families (and often don’t have extra seats in their minivans). And I'm lucky. Unlike many families, neither my husband nor I work at night, so we don't often need child care at odd hours.
So when I found the preschool my daughter is attending now, I felt like I had struck gold. My daughter has a specific time when she attends; however, if I need her to be there a little longer one day or I need them to look after another child as well, I just have to pay a few dollars more. Plus they have a summer program!
I still often have a hard time with schedules, especially when dealing with kindergarten. But flexible child care is a huge help.
