There it was! Portraiture! I then went to craigslist as a free advertising opportunity to test the waters. I created a portfolio online as a blog and put the link to the blog as well as some attached picture examples of my work. I put a different ad on craigslist weekly, under different headings- gifts, kids, pets, arts and crafts, etc. This helped broaden my scope of people I was reaching.
To my surprise, I started getting contacted for commissioned portraits. The more I did, the more variety I had for my portfolio and the more referrals I got. I learned that when I'd post a month before a major holiday, I'd be busy every night doing portraits as a great personal gift for people to give to others.
What I love so much about my job is I can have as little or as much work as I want to, depending on how often I choose to put ads out online or post things on Facebook. And the reactions I get from people who love something I create for them is priceless. It feeds me emotionally while I can help feed my family! :)
